Pick-up-and-play games are almost everyone's favorite type to play on their smartphone. No matter where you are, such games are great to simply waste a couple of minutes of your time, be it on your daily commute or while waiting in a line at the dentist's.
There is a sea of these games available for Android, but Subway Surfers is the one that started it all. It is an endless runner which came out in May 2012. In the game, you are a graffiti artist caught while spraying near a metro railway by an inspector and his dog.
Your goal is to get away while collecting coins, power-ups, and avoiding stationary wagons or moving trains. You can go right or left while jumping and crouching. Power-ups include score multipliers, jetpacks which take you to the skies, magnets to attract coins, and power jumpers.
You can unlock various other characters using in-game currency (coins) and actual money. Paying can make the game somewhat easier but its essence can be enjoyed without spending anything and that is exactly why it took over the world.
In 2018, Subway Surfers became the first Google Play Store game to cross one billion downloads. What's even more amazing is how it passed the two billion mark just two months after!
Everyone was playing it back then and having the highest score among your friends was a big thing. However, its repetitive gameplay won't keep you around that long unless you are competing with your friends for the high-score.
